About Sanderson Fabric
Making beautiful, English-inspired wallpapers and textiles for more than 150 years, Sanderson Fabric is an international name and is the oldest English brand in the interior design and decorating. Known for classic English designs, exceptional production techniques, and ingenious application of color, Sanderson Fabric carries on with its time-honored traditions, while relying on the creative authority of the most talented contemporary designers today.
Sanderson Fabric: A Long Tradition of Excellence: Sanderson Fabric began in 1860, when founder Arthur Sanderson started importing French wallpapers to London. One of the most popular wallpapers distributed by Arthur Sanderson was the imitation leather wallpaper designed by Paul Balin of Paris. In 1868 he began to work with skilled blockprinters in England, using his own wallpaper designs. Between 1869 and 1919 the company focused on producing world-class wall papers through their own factory. It was also during this period that the founder’s three sons joined the business, and the company renamed to Arthur Sander & Sons. A four-story factory in England was also established, and the wallpaper collections were moved to bigger showrooms. 1919 the company opened their own textile factory, giving birth to the very first Sanderson Fabric collections. These commission-printed textiles were first known as Eton Rural Cretonnes or Eton Rural Fabrics. In 1962 Sanderson Fabric launched a coordinated collection known as Triad. In 1984, a decorators’’ showroom was opened in New York, and the following year in 1985 Sanderson Fabric commemorated their 125th anniversary. The Sanderson Gallery, which showcases decorative products, home accessories, and toys, was established in 1990. In 2003 Sanderson was purchased by Walker Greenbank, wherein a huge investment in product development was made. The 150th year of Sanderson Fabric was celebrated on March 2010, through a special collection of wallpapers and fabrics. An exhibition also took place at the Fashion and Textile museum. A coffee table book on the history and legacy of Sanderson by Mary Schoeser was published by Thames & Hudson in commemoration of the brand’s 150th year.
Sanderson Fabric Collections: The collections from Sanderson Fabric are highly versatile, beautifully crafted, and constructed only from the finest materials. The main products of Sanderson are its matching fabric and wallpaper collections, with designs drawn from an extensive archive. While the designs are traditional English-inspired, the contemporary designers of Sanderson Fabric understands the importance of design reinterpretation to cater to the modern tastes and lifestyles of today. The wallpapers, first offered in 1860, are available in stripes, stylized florals, pearlescents, damasks, textures, and metallics. It was in 1921 that printed Sanderson Fabric collections were introduced. Today the brand offers printed fabrics in a variety of styles, from silk, satin, and cotton damasks to delicate embroideries, bold prints, brocades, and feminine florals.
Sanderson Fabric Awards and Latest News: Among the most recent accolades received by Sanderson are three awards during the House Beautiful Awards on November 11, 2010. Sanderson Fabric was the recipient of the Silver Award for A Painter’s Garden for Fabric Range of the Year, The Editor’s Award for the Vintage Collection and the Gold Award for Best Advertisement. The story of Sanderson is also published by Thames & Hudson, through historian Mary Schoeser’s Sanderson: the Essence of English Decoration. The newest collections from Sanderson include Bloomsbury Canvas Fabrics, Bloomsbury Canvas Wallpapers, Orlando Velvets, Orlando Weaves, and Dalloway Weaves & Embroideries.
