About Hable Construction

The brainchild of Susan Hable Smith and Katharine Hable Sweeney who are sisters and design experts, Hable Construction is a New York-based textiles company known for its sophisticated hand-drawn patterns and uncompromised quality in all of their products. From beautiful prints to textural wovens designed for the outdoors, Hable Construction offers an assortment of hand-printed signature collections, all rendered with a unique, pioneering artistry.

The Establishment of Hable Construction:  Hable Construction came into being after sisters Susan and Katharine decided to put up a business that will allow them to make full use of their respective talents. Susan, as an artist, has a noteworthy background on a variety of artistic disciplines, from sculpture and collaging to painting and even welding. Katharine's expertise, on the other hand, focused on journalism, marketing, and sales management, after having worked at Kate Spade and Polo Ralph Lauren. The sisters decided to put up Hable Construction in 1999, naming it after the 20th century road construction business of their great grandfather.  Through the innate creative talents of Susan and the business savvy of Katharine, Hable Construction has been producing sophisticated textiles for different settings for more than a decade. The company is known for fabrics that combine vibrant graphic, abstract, and bold hand-drawn prints which are applied using the time-honored screen printing technique. While all of the Hable fabrics are produced in the U.S., a partnership with a women's cooperative in Hungary in 2001 allowed the company to produce wool felt fabrics outside of the country, using the long-established appliqué technique utilizing hammer and chisel.  Hable Construction collections are represented through 12 showrooms internationally, and are widely distributed in more than 150 retail stores across the globe.

Prints, Wovens, and Wool Felt from Hable Construction: Hable Construction is known for its hand printed cotton linens, hand printed cotton canvass, outdoor weaves, Bella Dura fabric for indoors and outdoors, and wool felt products produced in Hungary. The cotton, linen, and canvass fabric collections are all hand printed from their factory in New England. Mesh screens are used to convert the designs into actual cloth prints, while sufficient pressure is used to ensure an even and clean result. The wovens from Hable Construction are also among the finest in the industry, which are made to be more durable and textural than the prints. The printing process employs a 19th century technique that makes use of jacquard weaves, which are durable, beautiful, and eco-friendly. Outdoor fabrics are created using Bella-Dura yarns, chosen primarily for its excellent qualities. With the water-repellent and fade-resistant features of Bella-Dura yarns, Hable Construction is able to produce top quality outdoor fabrics that resist weather changes and other external elements.

Hable Construction has also worked for some of the most noteworthy names in the industry such as Neiman Marcus, Barney's, Garnet Hill, and Procter & Gamble.  Through the hand-drawn artistry of Susan, the business savoir-faire of Katharine, and the commitment of their skilled artisans within the country and beyond, Hable Construction has maintained its steady growth and international reputation, making it one of the most trusted innovators of textile design and production all over the world.
