About David Sutherland

Thriving on design excellence, uncompromising quality, and design sustainability, David Sutherland is a furniture maker ultimately inspired by art and nature. Utilizing traditional, perfectionist techniques with an infusion of fresh perspectives, David Sutherland continues to offer many of the most     interesting, most sought after collections in the furniture industry market today.

The Story of David Sutherland: First and foremost an icon in the design industry, David Sutherland worked as an interior designer before opening his first representative showroom in Houston in 1978. Sutherland worked with John Hutton, whom he describes as a marketing visionary, in the opening of his first Dallas showroom. During that time John Hutton was already working for Angelo Donghia as design director. In 1994 a collection of furniture aptly named Sutherland was launched by David Sutherland. This collection, designed by John Hutton was launched during the opening of the first Sutherland showroom in Dallas. Primarily made up of fine quality outdoor furnishings, the collection became an instant hit in the market. Many of these furniture pieces mirrored the interior furnishings of John Hutton, but crafted to ensure comfort and livability especially when placed outdoors.  Due to the need for complementary outdoor fabrics for these furnishings, David Sutherland soon came up with their own fabric division, Perennials Outdoors Fabrics. Collaboration with wife Ann Sutherland allowed design icon David Sutherland to produce fabrics that combine excellent design with fresher perspectives. With the creation of the Sutherland furniture collection and the Perennial Outdoor Fabrics, the company strived to create stunning, unobtrusive furnishings that do not interfere with the innate beauty of their environments.

David Sutherland Collections: The collections of David Sutherland today are the result of combined efforts between David and his wife, Ann Sutherland, as well as collaborations with other designers. Being a people person David Sutherland is excellent with establishing connections and working with different clients and designers while Ann, with her detail-oriented character oversees the design process from conception to finish. The company believes in good design, making it as one of the hallmarks of their business. Their furniture collections are inspired by art and nature and are also sourced from David and Ann’s travels all over the world. Traveling, according to Ann Sutherland gives them a renewed perspective in their design, as colors, cultures, textures and light present something new every time. David Sutherland is also committed to sustainable design, through their use of natural materials and eco-friendly processes. According to David, the business philosophy of David Sutherland rests on three pillars – good design, great service, and excellent collaborations.

The Accolades of David Sutherland: More than the recognition as being one of the leaders in the designer furniture industry today, David Sutherland is also the recipient of several awards and nominations. The Trade Winds Collection designed by John Hutton for Sutherland, which feature teak furniture pieces with excellent upholstery, won the 2009 Adex Platinum Award. Another award winning collection which gained the same Platinum recognition for the same year was the Sutherland by Starck, RobinWood Deluxe Collection. The 2009 Silver Award for the Adex Awards was given to the Wild Side Collection by Perennials Outdoor Fabrics. Another collection by David Sutherland, the NetWorks Collection by Perennials, was also a nominee for the Adex Awards.
