About Schumacher Fabric

Believing that the first step to creating luxurious living spaces is to choose only the finest, most exquisite fabrics, Schumacher has made it their mission to create only the most luxurious, sophisticated textiles for the interior design market. For more than a century, Schumacher Fabric has stayed true to its commitment to excellence in quality and design, serving many of the world's most memorable interiors.

The Schumacher Fabric Heritage: It was in 1889 that Frederic Schumacher founded F. Schumacher & Co, in Manhattan. Paul Gadebusch became Frederic's partner in 1893, and in 1899 the founder brought in his nephew Pierre Pozier to join the company.  When Frederic died in 1912, Pozier became Vice President and steered the company to greater heights throughout the early years of the 20th century. A line of elegant yet inexpensive fabrics was introduced by the company in 1926, and a carpet division was opened in 1930. Eight years later the firm began to offer hand printed wallpapers as well. When Paul died in 1943, Pozier assumed the position of president, leading the company for almost ten years.  In 1989 Schumacher Fabric celebrated their 100th year in the industry by releasing a collection that commemorates the brand throughout its century-long history, The Centennial Archive Collection. In 1996 the company acquired the Greeff brand, as well as the Patterson, Flynn, & Martin brand in 1998. Four years later the firm acquired the Decorators Walk brand.  Today Schumacher Fabric is a fifth-generation company that is still family-owned; the only brand established during the 19th century still owned privately and managed by its founder's direct descendants.

Schumacher Textile Collections and Brands: Schumacher offers a widely-varied, sophisticated collection of designer fabrics, wallcoverings, furnishings, and textile trimmings. The designs they employ are versatile, keeping in mind the traditional taste of the classic decorator and the minimalist inclinations of the contemporary designer. Throughout the years the company has established its core brands, which include the Schumacher Classic, Modern, Elements, and Terra brand names. These luxurious fabrics are distributed through trade showrooms and sales representatives all over the world, from North and South America and Europe to Australia, Asia, and South Africa.

The Most Memorable Accomplishments of Schumacher Fabric: Since its establishment in 1889, Schumacher has steadily grown into one of the most respected textile firms in the U.S. and overseas. While the textiles produced by the company have been installed in prestigious venues like the White House and the Supreme Court Chambers of the United States, some of the best Schumacher Fabric selections have also graced several memorable venues such as the San Francisco Opera House in 1967 and the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives in 1951. In 1965 the fabric company installed a 1500-yard gold fabric for the main theater curtain at the Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center in New York City.  The company has also reproduced fabrics for historic restoration projects, including the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C., Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia, and the Historic Newport in Rhode Island.  Today Schumacher Fabric constantly updates their existing collections with the latest design offerings. Their latest offerings include Classic Prints & Wovens, Martyn Lawrence Bullard's fabric collection, and Chroma for Fall 2011.
