About Scalamandre
Known to recreate the finest, most elegant interiors for the most prominent homes and art houses, Scalamandre has always been associated with opulence and sophistication. For more than 70 years the forte of this silk company has always focused on historic restoration; and today this same level of excellence and quality is made available to a wider range of clientele, whether for residential use or for contract applications.
The Founding of Scalamandre: Scalamandre was established in 1929 by Franco Scalamandre and his wife, designer and painter Flora Baranzelli. Franco's father used work as a silk broker and fabric importer, operating in Calabria, Italy. After obtaining an engineering doctorate from the Royal Polytechnic School of Naples, he left Italy for the U.S., working first as a draftsman, and later taking up a teaching career at the E.A. Seeley School of Decoration, in New Jersey. He was married in 1929, and on the same year he and Flora Baranzelli, put up Scalamandre Silks. The founding year of the company was also the year that the restoration of all things historical - from houses to furnishings - was in full swing. Thus, the silk textile company found a very specialized niche producing recreated historic fabrics for installation in many homes and museums. Due to their ability at recreating the most beautiful fabrics in history the company grew its client base, earning the preference of many illustrious clients, from the White House to the Hearst Castle in California. Scalamandre has also reproduced textiles for the United States Capitol, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and for several state houses and mansions in the U.S. The Manhattan showroom of the firm housed the Scalamandre Museum of Textiles, first opened in 1936. The museum housed an American and European textile collection by the company, showcasing a variety of historic textiles until it closed in the late years of the sixties. Today, the Scalamandre name is synonymous to luxury, excellence in quality, and stylish, fresh designs. Their collections of fabrics, wallpapers, trims, and accessories are among the most sumptuous in the industry today, constantly updated to complement a range of contemporary tastes and lifestyles.
Scalamandre Fabrics: While the brand used to specialize in silks, a range of fabrics, wallpapers, and trims are also available from Scalamandre. The fabrics are divided into categories - prints, stripes, velvets, brocades, plaids/checks, sheers/casements, textures, damasks, plains, horsehairs, and tapestries. The collections of Scalamandre have been featured in designs magazines such as Traditional Home, House Beautiful, Veranda, Elle Décor, Town & Country, and several others.
Prestigious Scalamandre Restoration Projects: Scalamandre is known for its illustrious historic restoration projects, which include no less than working in the White House during the administration of U.S. President John F. Kennedy. The firm was commissioned to provide material, specifically silk fabric, for the restoration venture. Scalamandre silks were installed in the White House's Blue Room and Red Room. The company also produced customized weaves for the restoration of the White House during the administrations of Nixon, Carter, Reagan, Clinton, and Bush. When the United States Capitol needed silk and wool velvets for various interior projects, Scalamandre was commissioned to do the work. A few of the most memorable restoration projects by the brand included the Prestwould Plantation, The Marble House of Newport, The Breakers Estate, and the Rosecliff summer residence.
