The Scalamandre Fabric Story: Scalamandre Fabric is the collaboration of husband and wife team Franco Scalamandre and Flora Baranzelli, founded within the same year they were married, in 1929. Scalamandre is a manufacturer of traditional fabrics, textile trims, wall papers, carpets, and accessories, based in the U.S.  The son of Giuseppe Scalamandre, a silk broker and textile importer, and Maria Teresina Ambrosina Scalamandre, Franco obtained a doctorate degree at the Royal Polytechnic School of Naples before moving to the United States as an immigrant. He found work in Newark, New Jersey, at the Westinghouse Electric Company as a draftsman and later at the E.A. Seeley School of Decoration in Paterson, New Jersey as a teacher in drawing. Founding Scalamandre Fabric in the same year that a burgeoning movement on restoration was taking place in the U.S., the company was able to cater to the need for historic textile recreations by many stately homes and museums.

Scalamandre Fabric Collections: Scalamandre Fabric collections today are characterized by fresh, up-to-the-minute fabric designs, using a more innovative, original color palette and a feel for texture and prints that is the result of a long-standing commitment to excellence and refined taste. The brand features fabrics, wallpapers, textile trims, wallpapers, and accessories. These Scalamandre Fabric selections are made for upholstery, window treatments, and drapery. There is also a line created specifically for the hospitality and contract markets. The collections of Scalamandre Fabric include the Town and Country Collection, Arcadian Collection, Voyage to Cathay Collection, Botanica, Carnevale d'Italia, and Luxurious Home Interiors. Another collection is the Island Cloth Collection, featuring unique island life motifs and beach inspired prints.

Most Memorable Restoration Projects: Scalamandre has worked on several restoration projects, preserving many historic homes and estates as well as prestigious structures like the White House, Hearst Castle, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the United States Capitol. Scalamandre Fabric choices such as silks, woos, and velvets have been used in refurbishing the White House and the United States Capitol. Some of the most unforgettable restoration projects completed by Scalamandre include the 18th century Prestwould Plantation, which is the family residence of Sir Peyton Skipwith. The Marble House, one of the most opulent summer residences in New Port, Rhode Island, was restored to its former glory in 1995 by Scalamandre. Other restoration projects included the 11-acre Breakers Estate and the Rosecliff, the luxurious summer home of Tessie and Herman Oelrich.

The Accolades of Scalamandre Fabric: Franco Scalamandre, founder of Scalamandre Fabric, has been the recipient of several noteworthy awards during his lifetime, including the Thomas Jefferson Award from the American Society of Interior Designers. The National Trust for Historic Preservation bestowed Scalamandre the Gordon Gray Award for Achievement in Preservation. In recognition for his work on the preservation and reproduction of historic American textiles, The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America granted him a civic citation.  Some of the newest fabric releases from Scalamandre Fabric include the 100% cotton hand printed Gertrude's Rose, 100% silk striped damask Colombine, and the 75% cotton striped lampas Santa Maria.
