About Lee Jofa
Spanning centuries of textile expertise, Lee Jofa is known globally as a provider of fine decorative fabrics and interior furnishings. Lee Jofa Fabrics are celebrated worldwide for their depth of design, richness of texture, and sophistication in their use of colors and patterns. Effortlessly blending the best designs of the past and the finest styles of the present, the company has no doubt mastered the art of bringing together the best of both worlds.
The History of Lee Jofa: Springing from George Johnson's humble beginnings making rope on the wharfs of New York City in 1823, Lee Jofa Fabrics has evolved into one of the premiere textile companies in the world. Johnson shifted to the upholstery stuffing business after starting his rope making enterprise, catering to the demands for horsehair upholstery during that time. After Johnson partnered with Faulkner to create the business name JOFA, they eventually ventured into the importation and selling of decorative textiles. It was in 1888 that Arthur H. Lee Company was founded by Arthur H. Lee in England. The company was known for producing innovative weaves that satisfied the lofty requirements of designers during the Industrial Revolution period. Lee Jofa came into being in 1965 when JOFA was acquired by Arthur H. Lee & Sons. The new owners decided to combine the names of both companies creating a union that spans more than two centuries of fabric production proficiency. In 1986 the company purchases Groundworks, a maker of innovative, contemporary fabrics operating since 1985. Fast forward to almost ten years later, when Kravet Fabrics acquires Lee Jofa. From 2001 to 2007 the licensing division for the brand was launched, which include designs by Thomas O'Brien, David Hicks, and Eric Cohler. Several brands and interior furnishings were launched and distributed through the brand, such as the Cole & Son wallpaper in 2002, the upholstered furniture division in 2004, the Andrew Martin brand and several other brands in 2005, and the Bella Figura lighting division in 2006.
